Chapter 9

I rushed toward the small form on the table, but once I got there, I wasn’t sure what to do. The small dragon was limp, and there were burns on her feet and tail. Her eyes were closed, and because she was laying so flat, I couldn’t tell if she was breathing or not, but I was too shaky to reach out and touch her.

“Kas,” I whispered, but I couldn’t take my eyes off the baby dragon in front of me.

My hands reached out without my thinking, and then fear suddenly pulsed through my body and threatened to cripple me with the weight of it. The feeling was emanating from the small purple creature, and though I was saddened to know it was still afraid, I was also relieved to discover it was alive.

“She’s still breathing,” I said as Kas, Asta, and Eira made it to where I stood.

“Oh, thank Odin,” Kas sighed, and she closed her eyes and put her hand on her chest.

“Hey,” I murmured as I leaned down and looked at the little dragon. “You’re okay. We’re going to get you home.”

The little dragon’s tail twitched, and she opened her eyes just slightly to look at me, then closed them again.

“What’s she feeling?” Asta asked as she leaned down, too.

“She’s scared,” I sighed.

“Are they all scared?” Eira asked, and I could hear the worry in her shaky voice. “Do they not trust us?”

“Not all of them are scared still.” I shook my head. “But, this one… she seems to have been through a lot here.”

“Poor little thing.” Asta frowned. “What can we do?”

“Is she sleeping?” Eira asked.

“I don’t think so,” I said. “But she might be thirsty, do we have any--”

Before I could finish the question, Kas pulled a canteen out of her magic satchel and unscrewed the lid.

“Here,” the sorceress said as she thrust the canteen toward me.

I filled the lid with it with water from the vessel, and then I set it on the table next to the little dragon. I could sense she was still scared and apprehensive, but I slowly and gently placed my hand on her side.

Her heartbeat thumped through my palm, and I smiled and stroked her scales with my thumb. She had horrible burns on her tail and the tips of her wings, and I took a deep breath to steady myself as I was overwhelmed by an instant and pure disdain. I was all at once happy the man who’d done this was dead, and also angry because I wanted to kill him again.

No dragon deserved this kind of abuse, but especially not infants. They were so small and vulnerable, whoever would feel the urge to harm them clearly had no morals whatsoever.

“Here’s some water, sweet girl,” I told her in a soothing tone.

The little dragon slowly opened one green eye, and then she lifted her head and looked me up and down carefully.

“You’re okay,” I assured her as I continued to stroke her back with my thumb.

Her green eyes were still nervous, but she leaned forward and took a sip of water all the same.
